Purpose: To evaluate the adhesiveness of platelet rich plasma in conjunctival graft fixation, compared to nylon 10-0, in the pterigion surgery.
Methods: It was developed a prospective comparative study, including 64 patients with primary pterygium were studied. Variables considered for the study were: hyperemia, thickening, and invasion of the cornea, limbar compromiso, clinical impression, surgical time, aesthetics, postoperative disconfort, ulcers, recurrence, subconjunctival hemorrhage, edema and conjunctival cyst, graft dislocation or necrosis, graft loss, corneal leukoma, and granuloma and fixation of the conjunctiva.
Results: Graft fixation with platelet rich plasma decreases surgical time, reduces conjunctival edema and postoperative discomfort. No significant differences were found in subconjunctival hemorrhage resorption time, neither in the aesthetics results. All patients evidenced some irritation after the surgery. The most frequent surgery complications seen were subconjunctival hemorrhage and edema; and they were evident in all patients. No graft loss was seen in patients treated with platelet rich plasma.
Conclusions: Platelet rich plasma use in pterygium surgery is been widely studied. In order to evaluate its effectiveness, more studies are necessary. According to our results, it could be considered a gold standard in the future of surgical procedures for pterygium.
