Abstract

Objective: To describe the characteristics of ocular involvement in a series of cases with congenital Zika disease.

Clinical cases: Three patients under three years of age from Venezuela who consulted at the Prof Dr J Garrahan Hospital between 2016 and 2019 were evaluated. All of them presented a gestational history of maternal symptoms compatible with Zika disease, neurological alterations on physical examination and two of them had positive Ig G serology for Zika. The ophthalmological compromise varied in each one, one of them presented bilateral macular chorioretinal atrophy, another had pale papillae, and a third had normal fundus and strabismus.

Conclusion: Ophthalmological characteristics were variable in each patient. The compromise of visual function could be related not only to ocular involvement but also to neurological compromise. It is important that the follow-up of these children must be multidisciplinary and long-term, even in patients who are asymptomatic at birth.
